Retreat FAQs

Do I need to have fly fishing experience?

No! The great majority of women who attend Casting for Recovery retreats have never touched a fly rod. Weโ€™ll teach you everything you need to know, and youโ€™ll have the opportunity to challenge yourself at something new in a completely safe and relaxing environment.

Do I need to have fly fishing gear or equipment?

Nope! We will provide you with everything youโ€™ll need for fly fishing – waders, boots, rod, and reel!

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Casting for Recovery retreats are completely free of cost for participants. You need to arrange your own transportation to the retreat, but we will help coordinate ride-sharing whenever possible. All of your lodging, meals, snacks and activities will be covered!

How are participants selected?

Women at any age and any stage of treatment or recovery from breast cancer are eligible and may apply to attend the retreat nearest to them. Applicants submit their contact information online or by mail/fax and are chosen by a lottery drawing.

Are men with breast cancer eligible?

Unfortunately, at this point, due to the high demand of our programs, weโ€™re unable to serve men. We would be happy to help male breast cancer survivors research other programs and resources, and hope to extend our retreat offerings to men in the future.

What if Iโ€™m still in treatment?

As long as you have your physicianโ€™s approval to attend, we welcome women who are still undergoing treatment, and will accommodate a safe, successful experience!

Do you have medical support onsite at the retreats?

All Casting for Recovery retreats have volunteer medical staff who are there to provide breast cancer education and information. We do not offer direct medical care on site at our retreats, and our medical volunteers will assist in transport to the nearest medical clinic in case of an emergency. All medications need to be self-administered by participants.

What age are the women to attend?

Participants range in age from early 20s to early 90s, and are from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

Can I bring my husband, partner or dog?

We encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and enjoy a weekend to focus on yourself – in the company of other women who know exactly what youโ€™re going through and where youโ€™ve been. Please leave your husbands, partners and pets at home!

Who are metastatic retreats designed for?

ย These retreats are designed specifically for women living with metastatic (Stage IV) breast cancer.

Do I need to be โ€œfeeling wellโ€ to attend?

Participants come with varying energy levels and symptoms. Activities are flexible and rest is always prioritized.

How are metastatic retreats different from other CfR All Stages retreats?

Metastatic retreats often move at a slower pace, allow more rest time, and focus more on emotional support, and connection with others who share a similar diagnosis.

Can I attend if Iโ€™ve already participated in a CfR All Ages / All Stages retreat?

Yes. If your diagnosis has changed, we welcome and encourage CfR All Ages or All Stages retreat alumni to apply for a CfR Stage IV retreat.
