News

February 5, 2013. Ladies' Night at Sportsman's Warehouse was a huge success!  We spoke to many women, brochures got passed out, people loved the fly tying demonstrations and many were interested in volunteering.  Yay!

October 28, 2011   "Brassieres to Nowhere" at the Dorothy Page Museum in Wasilla was another fabulous art show, benefiting Casting for Recovery - Alaska.  Artists from the Mat-Su Valley and beyond gifted their creativity and talents to entertain the audience and raise money for our cause.  The masquerade party, complete with appetizers and punch, culminated in a live auction of the varied "brart" pieces.

October 27, 2011   The 3rd annual "Foundations for Recovery - Wild Bras on Parade" was a smashing hit.  Held this year at Cafe Del Mundo, viewers found themselves feasting not only on wonderful food and wine, but on the sights of wild bras not normally seen.  It was an unusual event where people could openly ogle and stare at bras in public.  Bras were actively bid on throughout the evening.  All this fun to raise awareness of the wonderful things Casting for Recovery does for breast cancer survivors!

July 17-19, 2011    Retreat number 16 found our volunteers in Fairbanks on July 17-19.  14 wonderful women from communities around the state found themselves being treated to casting lessons, fly tying lessons, introduction to equipment, everything they needed to know about bugs and more!  The warm accommodations at  A Taste of Alaska Lodge were much appreciated by both our participants and volunteers.

July 8-10, 2011     July 8-10 was our 15th retreat in Alaska!  A successful retreat at the Laverne Griffin Camp in Wasilla was a huge success (of course).  The flavor of the camp contributed to warm memories of fishing, casting, roasting marshmallows and variety of other fun things.  Our participants were a fun group of extraordinary women!

June 11, 2011

Alaska Run for Women!  Team CFR Alaska was there, but so were over 7,000 other women!  What a wonderful show of support for breast cancer awareness!

Check out this little runner about to cross the finish line, "Save My Ta-tas!!!"  Gotta love her!

June 11, 2011

Also this fine Saturday found some CFR Alaska volunteers at Potter Marsh Discovery Day, demonstrating fly casting to interested onlookers, young and old.  At left, we see our own Cilla showing a budding fly fisher the finer points of casting. He was loving it!

May 5, 2011

Ladies' Night at Sportsman's Warehouse on May 5 brought us great contacts and lots of fun with a "make it and take it" fly-tying table.  We wore our wonderful pink vests, generously donated by Sportsman's and embroidered on the back with the CFR logo.  Loads of fun, hopefully we'll be able to participate again next year! Below, Jolynne assisting a budding fly tier make a fly.

April 15, 2011
Alaska Fly Fishers annual fundraising auction. Again this year, CFR-Alaska participated in the event, volunteering time and selling items, including a pink fly box filled with over 100 locally tied flies!  (see below!)

March 18, 2011
Up All Night Tie-In at Mossy's. Mike Brown, owner of Mossy's Fly Shop, hosted an "Up All Night" tie- in, challenging fly-tying die-hards to tie 1,000 flies!  Mike opened his store at 9 in the morning and did not close until the goal was reached. Because we live in such a supportive community, the 1,000th fly was completed at 9:30 p.m., just 12 1/2 hours later!  In addition to donating the flies to CFR, Mike gifted 10% of his proceeds for the day.  Thanks, Mike!
