Casting for Recovery is all about hope. Hope is what makes it possible for breast cancer survivors to not just exist but to thrive in the face of their diagnosis. Through the simple tools of being in nature, challenging ourselves to learn new skills (fly fishing), and being with others who understand our stories and our experiences, life becomes richer and we become more than we ever thought possible. These are the experiences offered during a Casting for Recovery retreat. Our goal is to make Casting for Recovery available to breast cancer survivors residing in Montana.
The first CFR Montana Glacier Country (MT-2) retreat was held September 9 - 11, 2011 at the Glacier Outdoor Center, just outside the West Entrance to Glacier National Park. This retreat in western Montana hosted 14 participants in various stages of breast cancer treatment and recovery, and was modeled after other successful CFR programs with retreat staff, including psychosocial counselors, fly-fishing instructors, and volunteer community members, who were trained specifically for the Casting for Recovery program. Participants dined on tasty healthy food; experienced a warm, caring, and low-stress environment; and received support, medical information, and fly-fishing instruction from our skilled volunteer staff in a beautiful, natural setting. Evaluations from our participants suggest that CFR retreats can be life-changing.

The 2011 CFR-MT2 Retreat Team was so excited to be able to provide a high caliber fly-fishing retreat weekend for our participants. We were glad to get to know all of you as well as share fishing tips, tricks, and lore. Thank you for your participation in our inaugural retreat. Every one of us feels blessed for sharing this with you. Our hearts will be touched forever. Special thanks to Peg and Starr for traveling out to Montana to train our new team for the retreat. Their insights and wisdom from years of CFR work has proven to be very valuable for our team.

MT Glacier Country (MT2) Inaugural Retreat Held
Our first retreat was a wonderful experience for all who participated. We had a great time and could not have asked for better weather. We had several touching testimonials and were featured in an article in the Flathead Beacon. You can view the article and some pictures here. It is hard to put into words how truly enlightening it is to watch women come to the retreat not knowing what to expect and have them leave with smiles on their faces. Hearts were opened and bonds were formed. These women were so inspiring and we all felt truly blessed to be a part of this experience. Thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers who made this possible. We can hardly wait until next year! We will be updating the site with pictures and quotes as soon as all are gathered.
Stay tuned for the 2013 Retreat update.
Special thanks to the Montana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure! In 2011, they awarded CFR-Montana Glacier Country $14,000 to help establish a second Casting for Recovery retreat location in Montana, offering a unique and innovative support and educational program to more breast cancer survivors.
Montana - Glacier Country in the Press
How Glacier Country Was Founded
CFR-Montana, Glacier Country was established in 2010 because, years before, Landis Vance had attended a CFR retreat in another state when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The retreat changed her life, giving her a sport and a focus that kept her will to live strong, even after being diagnosed with a recurrence and metastatic disease. That desire, to share the Casting for Recovery experience, with other women who have been touched by this disease is shared by all of the Montana-Glacier Country team. Read all about it in this article from the Daily Interlake newspaper: Daily Interlake Article.
Fish Slime Cures Everything
We in Glacier Country believe that there is nothing so terrible that a little fish slime won't make you feel better. Read this fun article in the Flathead Living Magazine by former Glacier Country team member Rachel Vandevoort: Flathead Living article.
See us in the New York Times! Casting for Recovery was featured in the special "Giving Section" in November 2010.
