Since 2005, CFR-Indiana has successfully delivered thirteen retreats to 181 Indiana breast cancer survivors from all walks of life. Retreats are held at the beautiful Wooded Glen Retreat and Conference Center located on 567 scenic acres in Henryville, IN. Two lakes are stocked with bass, catfish, and bluegill for catch-and-release fishing. Wooded Glen offers a peaceful setting to relax, and provides their guests with homemade recipes served buffet style at each meal.
Consider the words of Michelle, a 2010 Indiana participant: “This weekend used the beautiful art of fly fishing, combined with counseling and medical expertise, to bring each participant one step further in her road to recovery. It was truly a tapestry of grace, love, compassion, respite, and healing.... A huge thank-you goes out to the hundreds of volunteers who make this retreat possible. An even bigger thanks goes out to the men and women who contributed financially in order to make this specific weekend possible. Thank you so much!”
Seven annual CFR Indiana alumni reunions have also been held in various locations to reinforce and support connections made at the retreats. 28 alumni attended the 2013 reunion.

Kandi Rutledge, 2005 alumnus, along with her daughter, Tami Rutledge-Harr, planned and organized a silent auction held at New Castle Motorsports Park in New Castle, IN on May 3. Local and surrounding state race car drivers were there to register that day to participate in the Route 66 Series being held that weekend. Many local area business generously donated gift cards and various products to be auctioned. On the following Saturday, Kandi and Lori Mercer, September 2009 alumnus, worked “A Pink Day” at Ross Lawn & Landscaping. New Castle, Knightstown, and Greenfield merchants were very generous with their monetary donations. Between the two events, $1,500 was raised. Great job, Kandi, and to all who helped with these two events!
Our 3rd Annual CFR Indiana Silent Auction was held at the Moon Dog Tavern on July 26. Deb Hire, 2005 alumnus, chaired this event which seems to get bigger and better each year. Several CFR Indiana alumni either donated items or helped Deb in contacting businesses to request donated items. Deb would like to say a special “thank you” to Mary Smith who helped her do much of the behind the scenes work and to all the CFR Indiana alumni who helped the evening of the event. And, thank you to the Moon Dog Tavern who allowed us to set up the silent auction on an evening when one of the most popular local area bands, Zanna-Doo!, performed. An amazing $4,200 was raised that evening! Awesome job, Deb!!
On the evening of July 18, the Orvis Retail Store at Clay Terrace in Carmel hosted an exclusive “Fish Tales & Cocktails” event benefiting CFR Indiana featuring a silent auction with many great items. The items included a Helios 2 rod, original artwork by Bruce Neckar (one of our dedicated river helpers), an unbelievable fly collection tied by Junior Burke (another amazing river helper), and guided fly fishing trips. Food and drinks were provided compliments of Republic National Distribution Company. This event provided a wonderful opportunity to educate others on how CFR changes the lives of breast cancer survivors. The 2-hour event raised $2,898. A huge “THANK YOU” to Orvis and all our fly fishing partners who made donations and/or purchased items for the silent auction.
Our CFR Indiana Alumnae Reunion was held on September 21 at the Louis J. Jenn Memorial Park on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Approximately, 28 alumni attended. Erica Sheets, 2005 alumnus, did an outstanding job of planning and organizing our day to include refreshments, lunch, decorations, remembering those alumni we have lost to breast cancer, and of course, fly fishing in the pond, and lots of relaxing and visiting. The weather was beautiful, the fishing fun, and the cabin provided a wonderful facility to host our reunion. Thank you, Erica, and to those who helped her that day.
In September, Sue (Cira) Treadway, September 2010 alumnus, presented a $500 check to Mary Smith, Indiana Program Director, and Penny Myers, 2006 alumnus, for CFR Indiana as her charity of choice from her employer, Reith Riley Construction. Please note the beautiful artwork from Bruce Neckar on Sue’s wall at work! Thank you, Sue, and Reith Riley Construction!!
In October, Donna Jourdan, May 2010 alumnus, hosted a Mary Kay party during National Breast Cancer Awareness month with her family, friends, and other CFR alumni. Her Mary Kay consultant, Sarah Price, donated 15% of her sales for the entire month to CFR Indiana. She netted $250 to help towards sending a cancer survivor to a retreat. Donna and several other CFR alumni also attended the Evansville Komen Survivor Breakfast on August 24 to help spread the word at a table they had in the lobby. They included Donna, Linda Berry (2011), Shirley Baughn (September 2012), Niki Sammet (September 2012), Donna Blanchard (May 2013), Debbie Welz (May 2010), and Judith Hatfield (2011). Thank you, ladies, for all you are doing to fundraise and raise awareness for CFR Indiana in our southern part of the state.
The Midwest Sisters on the Fly held an auction on October 18 at Potato Creek State Park in North Liberty, IN and raised $3,600 for CFR Indiana at their annual “I Love Fall Camping” weekend. What a wonderful group of very generous ladies! Thank you, thank you, thank you from CFR Indiana!!
Once again, Tanya Brizendine, owner of Totally New You Hair & Nails salon in Greenwood, IN, sold pink hair extensions at a Breast Cancer Benefit held on October 6 to raise money for CFR Indiana in memory of her good friend, Mary Garrette, a May 2009 alumnus. This year, Tanya added a cake walk, invited other local businesses to participate, and held a raffle. Erica Sheets, 2005 alumnus, had a booth where she shared information about CFR, grilled hot dogs, and did face painting to help raise funds. Approximately, $1,000 was donated to CFR Indiana. Thank you, Tanya and Erica, for all your hard work!
Orvis Retail Store at Clay Terrace in Carmel provided us a wonderful opportunity to do outreach and fundraise while having some fun during the Christmas holiday season. CFR Indiana alumni offered free gift wrapping for Orvis customers who made a donation and provided these customers with a coupon for a future purchase. Orvis provided all the materials needed and our alumni provided the workers to do the gift wrapping. We were able to sign up three new applicants for our May 2014 retreat and Orvis raised $1,323 on our behalf. Our sincere thanks to Orvis and to all who participated in gift wrapping! You helped raise enough money to send a participant to a CFR Indiana retreat!!
